Drive Missing From Disk Utility

If Disk Utility’s sidebar is empty for that enclosure, this isn’t a Finder checkbox. The Mac never enumerated the hardware — or the enclosure never woke up.

1. Show All Devices before you panic

Disk Utility’s default view is volumes only. An unformatted disk, a disk with a bad partition map, or a device that never mounted can sit one level up and look like it’s gone.

View > Show All Devices. The outermost row is the hardware. Everything indented under it is a container or a volume.

Disk Utility > View > Show All Devices. Resize the sidebar. A long list of snapshots can push a new device off the visible area. Quit Disk Utility and open it again after you reseat the cable. It doesn’t always refresh live.

2. Power, cable, port — in that order

Desktop enclosures that starved for power look exactly like a disconnected disk. So do USB-C cables that only charge. I keep one known-good data cable on the desk for this test.

Use the enclosure’s power adapter if it has one. Plug into the Mac, not a hub, dock, or monitor with a USB pass-through. Try another data cable and another Mac port. If you have a USB/Thunderbolt hub that wants its own wall wart, plug that in too.

3. A clean reconnect

USB can get stuck in a half-ready state, especially after sleep. A full shutdown is dull and it works more often than another launch of Disk Utility.

Shut down the Mac. Unplug the drive and anything else you don’t need for this test. Wait about 30 seconds. Start up. When the desktop is up, plug the drive in once. On an Apple silicon laptop, unlock it first. A locked Mac may refuse a new accessory until you say Allow.

4. Prove it isn’t this Mac

Option-click the Apple menu > System Information. USB, or Thunderbolt / USB4, depending on the enclosure. If the device never appears there, Finder and Disk Utility cannot invent it.

If a second computer also sees nothing, stop. That’s the enclosure, the bridge chip, or the drive itself. I don’t pretend a Mac setting can revive undetected hardware.

Still missing after a known-good cable, a wall adapter, and a second machine: that’s a service problem, not a Settings toggle.
